This is the place where we'll offer some ideas, tips and suggestions to enhance the Up North experience. This will change as the seasons change or as we find new ideas, products, suggestions we feel our HPG friends may enjoy. Let's start with the basics:

  • Sunday New York Times: Okay you're Up North, but here you get at least a week of reading to keep you somewhat connected with the outside world. Who is Paris dating, what is the best fly-fishing rod, how did the renovation of the MOMA cost $800 million? Also, in the end it's great for fish wrap or slicing that cold, crisp watermelon. Available at the Boulder Market on Main Street.
  • L'Occitane: Anything from this French beauty and bath empire is worth having around the lake place. What a nice way to welcome your female guests up for a long weekend..a little basket of goodies from our friends across the pond.
  • Fresh Apple Pie: Keep the snowshoes handy 'cause you're going to need them after you devour one of these treats from the Outdoorsman in Boulder Junction. Talk to Steve, Amy or Dona and they'll take good care of you. If you eat it there, sit by the fireplace, ask for the special coffee and watch the snow fall. You'll feel like you're in Frisco Colorado circa 1977.
  • 2000 St.Supery Napa Valley Merlot: Forget about Sideways for a moment.this is what the merlot grape is supposed to be! We use our grills a lot Up North right? Any beef or poultry grilled over charcoal (ideally) will come alive when you serve up this $24 bottle of wine. See Dennis at Trigs Wine Cellar in Minocqua. His knowledge of wine is unsurpassed.
  • A Dogs Life: A little book by Peter Mayle (A Year in Provence) that is quick, fun, entertaining, can be read by anyone and is perfect for that classic, damp, 60 degree day spent on the porch with a blanket. See Cindy at The Shade Tree in Boulder.
  • The Trail at Fallison Lake: Here's a hidden gem. Check out this easy little 2 ½ mile hike around this picturesque lake. You'll probably be the only one on the trail as you pass through gorgeous stands of red pine, a few old growth whites and a couple of boulders that will remind you of the Ice Age. Ski it in the winter. Try lanterns late at night. Off of "N" about 3 miles east of "M".
  • The latest recording by Feist called "Let it Die": Amazing piece of work to be enjoyed anywhere. You'll listen to it on the way to the cabin, at the cabin and on the way home from the cabin. As one review stated, "emotive, poignant and leagues ahead of Norah Jones". You'll love it!
